Friends’ Projects
The annual Friends of the Library Used Book Sale, usually held in
June, is the major fundraiser for the organization. Books, videos,
and audiotapes are received from the public on a year round basis.
These, along with similar items weeded from the library collection,
are sold to the public on a donation basis. In recent years, the
Friends have used funds from book sales and membership dues to
enhance the library and to sponsor programming. Some of the
projects funded by the Friends include:
-
Purchased a cement bench and plaque in memory of an active Friends
supporter
-
Cleaned
and re-upholstered furniture in the Adult Reading Room
-
Provide
a subscription to BookPage, a monthly review of newly
published books, for library patrons
-
Sponsor publication of the Children's
Department quarterly newsletter,
The Library Vine
-
Sponsor
Adult, Teen, and Children's Department summer reading programs
-
Donate
books to Harbor House, the Multi-County Juvenile Attention Center,
the homeless shelter, and to I-77 rest stops
-
Donate
library book bags for patron use at check-out
-
Donated
funds to purchase a DVD/CD refinishing machine
-
Sponsored an Early Literacy Computer Station in the newly renovated
Children's Department
-
Sponsor
and provide refreshments for author events and book signings
In the past, the Friends of the Library have also purchased for the
library a handicapped door, an Ellison die-cut machine for cutting
letters, numbers, and pictures, stained glass in the library entry,
and utility baskets for staff and patron use. The Friends were also
instrumental in assisting with Main Street @ Midnight, New
Philadelphia's annual community New Year's Eve celebration.
