Service Response #5: Information Literacy

The library will assist library users to develop the skills needed to find, evaluate, and use information effectively.

INFORMATION LITERACY—ADULT DEPARTMENT

Objective #1 Within two year, Reference staff will develop and provide Internet, Microsoft Office, research database and online card catalog training for the public.

Objective #2 Within two years, members of the adult services staff will be trained in how to maintain the adult services pages of the library’s website.

Objective #3 Within one year, members of the reference staff will publicize the library’s services to the blind twice per year.

INFORMATION LITERACY—CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT

Objective #1 Within two years, the New Philadelphia juvenile department will offer at least two information literacy programs to students and/or parents and teachers annually.

Objective #2 Within two years, responses to a pre-test and post-test information literacy survey of participants of Internet camp (a parent-child series program) will indicate that participants retained at least 75% of the material presented.

Objective #3 Within one year, the children’s department will incorporate information literacy elements into its summer reading programs and story time handouts.

Objective #4 Within two years, seventy-five percent of library users who used the library’s website will indicate that they found the library’s website and online catalog useful to them.

INFORMATION LITERACY—EXTENSION DEPARTMENT

Objective # 1 Within two years, each branch library will provide at least one class teaching online searching techniques.

Objective # 2 Within five years, each branch library will analyze the need for an additional computer with Internet access for customer use.

Objective #3 Within one year, at least 50 library users per branch library will add an email address to their customer record.

Objective # 4 Internet usage as indicated by library records will increase by five percent per year for each branch library.

Objective # 5 Within one year, 25% of library users surveyed will indicate that they have accessed and found useful any of the following using either a library provided computer or their home computer: Their own customer record Online library catalog Library sponsored databases Library website
