Oscar Winners & Nominees

Many movie buffs out there, like myself, make a point of watching current and past movies that had recognition from the Academy Awards for any of the 24 categories in which movies can be nominated. Hoopla Digital provides a wide selection of 97 films that have received the merit to be Oscar winners and contenders! Here are my top five movies that we have available for you:

  1. Amélie (2001)- Charming, heartwarming, and magical. Amélie is a French romantic comedy that shows us the whimsical daily life of a socially isolated waitress (Audrey Tautou) who decides to execute complex schemes to affect the lives of the eccentrics around her. Nominated for 5 Oscars.
  2. Frida (2002)- Inspiring, artistic, and powerful. Frida tells the story of Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek), opening with the beginnings of her artistic talents after she became injured during a bus accident to her troublesome relationship with Diego Rivera and her journey to becoming a renowned artist. Winner of 2 Oscars with an additional 4 nominations.
  3. Memento (2000)- Unforgettable, innovative, and original. Memento tells the story of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) a man who lost the ability to create new memories after a tragic event where he and his wife were attacked and she was subsequently murdered; we follow him on his journey to find the killer despite his handicap. Nominated for 2 Oscars.
  4. Monster (2003)- Gripping, tragic, and eye-opening. Monster is a biographical film and tells us the story of Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron) a Daytona Beach hustler who becomes a serial killer and what led her to life choices. Won the Oscar for best actress by Charlize Theron, the only nomination.
  5. On Golden Pond (1981)- Heartwarming, reflective, and sentimental. On Golden Pond tells the story of an elderly couple (Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn) in which the father has an estranged relationship with his daughter, Chelsea (Jane Fonda). While at their summer home on Golden Pond, the couple agrees to look after Chelsea’s new boyfriend’s son, Billy. Surprising friendships, family dynamics, and relationships began to blossom over the summer in this touching tale. Winner of 3 Oscars with an additional 7 nominations.
