Poe Museum Joins County Library

Join the Tuscarawas County Public Library System Wednesday, March 24th at 6:00 pm via Zoom when they host the Poe Museum from Richmond, Virginia for a discussion on Edgar Allan Poe’s experience with pandemics and how it shaped his work.

“One of the most influential authors of the 19th Century, Edgar Allan Poe was the first author to try to make a professional living as a writer,” said Tuscarawas Branch Supervisor Tabitha Johnson.

Poe lost many loved ones to diseases like cholera, yellow fever, and tuberculosis, as well as facing the terror of plagues and pandemics. These things left a lasting impact on his work. Classics like The Masque of the Red Death and King Pest were both inspired by an 1832 global cholera pandemic Poe witnessed.

“His work was inspired by many of the events happening around him,” said Johnson. “The Poe Museum will demonstrate how the author grappled with issues similar to what many of us have faced in living during more recent pandemics.”

This program will take place virtually through Zoom. Space is limited but registration is required. Interested parties can visit the library’s online event calendar or by calling 330-364-4474.
