The Tuscarawas County Public Library’s Main location will welcome New York Times best-selling children’s author Debbie Diesen on Friday, June 8 at 11AM as part of their on-going Visiting Author Series. Diesen is the author of The Pout-Pout Fish series of books as well as several other stand-alone children’s titles.
“Our Visiting Author Series program strives to bring a diverse group of authors to our library to speak each year,” said Extension & Technical Services Manager Andrea Legg. “That means inviting authors of all types of published work, whether it’s adult or teen fiction, memoir, poetry, graphic novels, or children’s books. It’s important that attendees are given the chance to hear about the writing process for each of these types of creative writing.”
The Pout Pout Fish, which follows a down-on-his-luck sea creature whose underwater friends pull out all the stops to bring a smile to his face, is a popular pick for young children because of its undeniably catchy rhyming structure and vibrant illustrations. Critics have called The Pout-Pout Fish “hilarious” (Kirkus) and “entertaining” (School Library Journal), and TIME magazine named it as one of their Top Ten Children’s Books of the Year in 2008.
Diesen is also the author of spinoff titles like The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark, The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School, The Pout-Pout Fish and the Bully-Bully Shark, and standalone titles like Bloom and Catch a Kiss. She has worked as a bookseller, bookkeeper, and reference librarian. She and her family live in Michigan.
Copies of Diesen’s books will be available for sale and signing at the conclusion of the program. Readers are also invited to bring their personal copies of Diesen’s books to have signed by the author. Refreshments will be made available and children will be able to take a photo with a life-sized version of the Pout-Pout Fish.
