Find Your History at the County Library

Have you been interested in researching your genealogy but don’t know where to start, or have you hit a brick wall in your research? The Tuscarawas County Public Library is hosting genealogy classes this spring for people at all stages of research.

On February 12th, the library will host “Ancestry Library for Beginners.” This 6:00 PM class will teach the basics of this extremely helpful library resource.

A library staff member will help on February 14th from 5:00-7:00 PM with one-on-one sessions in preservation by assisting in the scanning of slides, negatives, photos, or documents.

Continue your family history exploration on March 11th by attending “Beginning Genealogy Websites” at 6:00 PM. This class will introduce the best genealogy websites for researching family history and provide a look at the resources the library has to offer.

“These beginner classes are great for anyone who thinks they may be interested in researching their family history,” said Gina Merrill, Public Service Associate. “The classes highlight the resources available at your County Library to research your family tree at no cost.”

For the more advanced researchers, the library is providing a class called “Church Records and Your Family History Research” on April 29th at 6:00 PM. Genealogy Specialist Deb Kitko from the Wayne County Public Library will share how early church records can fill in some gaps and bolster your family history research.

“Most everyone reaches that genealogy "brick wall" at some point in their genealogy research where they get stuck on one ancestor and can't seem to go back any further,” said Merrill. “There are ways to attempt to climb over that wall and find the answers you need to complete your family tree.”

All of these classes are free of charge and open to the public, but registration is required. Registration may be done by visiting the library’s online event calendar or by calling 330-364-4474. The spring genealogy programs are offered at the Main Library located at 121 Fair Ave NW, New Philadelphia.
