The New Philadelphia Friends of the Library are hosting their 8th Garden Tour fundraiser on Saturday, July 11th from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Tickets are on sale for the self-guided tour, which includes six gardens in Tuscarawas County.
“This year’s tour will focus on gardens in northern Tuscarawas County,” said Friends President Candy Beaber. “The proceeds from the Garden Tour will benefit the Tuscarawas County Public Library Foundation.”
The Library Foundation, which was formed in 2019, provides a vessel for the library to receive gifts that, through investment and growth, will provide benefits for the Tuscarawas County Public Library System for years to come.
The self-guided tour will showcase gardens in Tuscarawas County, including a variety of garden types and plants, from historic gardens to pollinator gardens, and features like a greenhouse, brick pathways, water features, and edible landscapes. Gardens on the tour include:
- Clawson Homestead — Stroll through this garden nestled in New Philadelphia behind West School. This property features a rose garden and an array of other flowers, trees, and shrubs. Relax on the bench and enjoy the soothing sounds of the water features.
- Gnome Home — Stop by this pollinator paradise outside of Bolivar. Follow the brick edging to see how this homeowner has incorporated native plants into their landscaping to attract birds, butterflies, and bees. View their asparagus and raspberry patches, raised garden beds, then relax by the fire pit or under the shade of over 10 different mature trees.
- Monarch Gardens — Explore the abundance of perennials at these quaint neighboring homes in the Village of Bolivar. Learn what plants attract butterflies, see what treasures are growing in the greenhouse, enjoy the calming effects of this garden’s decorative pond, and purchase some delicious sourdough bread from the farmstand before relaxing on the deck.
- Shirl’s Garden — Enter this beautiful garden in Dover through the iron gate. Walk along the brick path while appreciating the surrounding water feature. Take in the breathtaking views of the big blue hydrangeas, lady in red roses, french ferns, Japanese maple, and enjoy the shade of a lover’s birch and dogwood trees.
- Terra Depot — This nature specialty shop in Navarre features bird feeders, bird houses, delightful garden statuary, and more. Tour the 100’ high tunnel featuring seven heirloom varieties of red raspberries and learn how to support a healthy habitat with native plants including perennials, shrubs, and trees.
- The Zoar Garden — Dating back to 1830 this garden, located in the Historic Zoar Village, is laid out as the Separatists of Zoar once had it planted. The garden is a representation of the New Jerusalem from the book of Revelations. 12 apostle trees circle a large center tree representing Jesus. A large variety of modern and historic plantings are available for view including peonies planted by the Separatists themselves. The garden also features a garden house with an attached hot house, one of the first in Ohio.
Tickets are available to purchase and pick up during normal business hours at the Main Library in New Philadelphia and the Library’s four branches in Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek, and Tuscarawas. Tickets cost $15 and may be purchased by cash or check made out to the Friends of the Library – NP. Those wishing to pay by credit card can purchase tickets at the Main Library.
In the event of rain, the tour will be held on Sunday, July 12th from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
